Recruitment process

There are six steps in the apprentice recruitment process.

  1. 1 Application form & resume

Your first step in the process is to complete an application online. You'll also need to submit a resume, a copy of your latest school results/highest education, provide details of previous work experience and referees, and answer some numerical, comprehension and mechanical reasoning questions. We will ask you to share what your motivation is to become an apprentice with us. Application forms will be available only between the specified recruitment drive dates.

Your responses to these questions help us to choose the applicants we believe would be most suitable for the jobs. This process ensures that each applicant is assessed on a level playing field.

Responses to these questions are used throughout the recruitment process to short-list candidates. So, ensure you put effort into these responses.

  2. 2 Online testing

The next stage in the process, for those who are successful, is to be invited to complete a range of online tests that can be done in your own time. These tests are designed to assess problem-solving skills, the ability to understand and interpret data and mechanical and spatial reasoning skills. You must complete the assessment by the application closing date. Results will remain confidential to us.

  3. 3 Recorded video interview

For applicants who progress past the online testing stage, the next step in the process is a recorded video interview. In this stage you record your answers to a set of behavioural questions in a set amount of time. This is completed by using a personal device which can connect to the internet, such as a mobile phone, laptop, desktop, or tablet.

  4. 4 Assessment centre

The next stage in the process, for those who are successful, is to be invited to attend an assessment centre in a regional centre. This could include areas such as Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Toowoomba or various other depots dependent on numbers and locations.

The day is broken down into two stages.

Stage 1 – Online testing is undertaken to verify your results detailed in the application form (approximately 1 ½ hours)

    • Trade language literacy and numeracy
    • Verbal reasoning
    • Colour perception wire assessment
    • Manual dexterity assessment.

There's no need to study for these tests. Practice tests are available by searching online if you would like to refresh your skills or use the practice test.  These tests measure your abilities as they relate to the role of an electrical industry technical employee. Results will be kept confidential and will not be provided to applicants once completed.

If you are successful at stage 1 you will be invited to remain for stage 2. Unfortunately, not all attendees will necessarily be successful at this stage. We will assess your results and inform you whether you will be required to remain for stage 2 shortly after your testing is complete.

Stage 2 – Team activities (approximately 2½ hours)

This stage involves undertaking assessed team activities. You will also hear from our apprentice group and the recruiting managers about what you can expect as an apprentice. This is a great opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about being an apprentice, studies, travel, or the recruitment process.

  5. 5 Reference checking

You will be asked to provide us with the names and contact details of two referees who can tell us about your school and/or work performance and experience, as part of your initial application. With your permission, we'll speak to these people about your performance as it relates to the position.

  6. 6 Pre-employment medical

At this stage, you'll also be asked to complete a pre-employment medical examination with one of our preferred doctors. This medical will ensure that you are fit for the work for which you have applied, in addition to ensuring we do not place you in an unsafe environment due to any possible medical condition that you may have.

Appointment

If you're successful, we'll phone you and offer you the apprenticeship confirming your start date, followed by an electronic offer. When you start, you'll complete our induction program to help you become more familiar with our organisation. Once that's completed, your apprenticeship training will truly begin.

When we are advertising for apprenticeship applications the details will be shown on our Positions and locations web page.
