Public lighting
As part of the process to connect public (street) lighting to the electricity network we need to confirm if suitable power supply from our network is available for your connection. To do this we need to establish a new connection contract with you.
Important: Only local governments (Councils) or the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) can apply for unmetered Public Lighting connections. If you’re a business wanting to install lighting at your premises, you can apply for a watchman (security) lighting connection. If you are a private resident and want to discuss additional street lights or the relocation of street lights, please contact your local government.
How to connect public (street) lighting
-
1 Getting started
The best place to start is with the design drawings for your proposed street lighting. You can either engage a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) certified design consultant for this, or we can also provide this service for you.
I'll use my own consultant for the design drawings
Your design must be completed by a design consultant from the Approved Public Lighting Design Consultants (PDF 166.2 kb) list. Your consultant will work with you to finalise your lighting design drawings and can also submit your Connect Application on your behalf. If you prefer to apply yourself, your consultant can provide the required information you’ll need for your Connect Application.
I want you to do the design drawings
Submit a Connect Application (see Step 2) with as much information as possible and we will help you with the design drawings. We’ll contact you within 10 business days after your application has been submitted.

2 Submit a Connect Application
To get your street lights connected, you need to apply and accept our offer to start your new connection contract with us. You or your consultant can submit your Connect Application.
The application should be made via Customer Self Service or the Electrical Partners Portal if the applicant is licenced appropriately.
Important: Any relevant design drawings and documents must be attached to your application.

3 Accept our Connection Offer
Once the Connect Application has been submitted, we will review the application and provide a Connection Offer. The offer must be accepted for your new connection to proceed.
Basic connection
If your connection service type is assessed as basic, the application can be fast-tracked when submitting online by ensuring the Expedite Application box is ticked. The connection contract will automatically be created based on the terms of our Model Standing Offer Standard Connection Unmetered (PDF 1.2 mb).
If your application is assessed as basic, but is not expedited, we’ll make a Basic Connection Offer within 10 business days (or other date agreed with you). You will have 45 business days to accept our offer. Your connection contract starts when the offer is accepted.
Negotiated connection
If your connection service type is not basic, or you want to negotiate the terms of your connection contract, then it’s classed as negotiated.
We’ll contact the person who applied within 10 business days to discuss the terms of your connection contract. There may be additional costs which will need to be accepted at this time. We’ll aim to make a Negotiated Connection Offer within 65 business days of your application.
You'll have 20 business days to accept the offer. Your connection contract starts when the offer is accepted.

How much will it cost?
Connection service charges
Fees and charges will depend on whether any upgrade works are needed on the electricity network to connect your street lighting.
We’ll calculate the installation costs, and any other charges that may apply under a Negotiated Connection Offer, for example a network extension fee or a capital contribution.
An estimate of all fees and charges will be outlined in your Connection Offer for your acceptance. See our latest price lists on our Connections charges web page.
All our connection services charges have been approved by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).
Ongoing electricity usage charges
There will also be ongoing power usage charges for your street lights. Refer to your electricity retailer regarding these costs.
