Scam texts targeting Energex customers

Energex is urging the community to be on the lookout for scam texts making the rounds in South East Queensland claiming to be from the electricity distributor and asking for customers’ personal details.

Energex’s Manager of Customer Operations Brent Sheriff stated that the company has received reports of these unsolicited messages and emphasised Energex will never request sensitive information from customers.

“We will never ask for personal or financial details via text, email, phone, or door-to-door visits. If you receive such a request, do not provide any information,” Mr Sheriff said.

“Our legitimate texts are only sent to customers enrolled in our self-service portal and are intended solely for updates on outages, scheduled meter readings or to request a customer call us directly.

“Importantly, these messages will never ask for personal or financial information.”

Customers who receive suspicious texts claiming to be from Energex are urged not to respond. Instead, they should report the messages to scamwatch.gov.au and contact Energex at 13 12 53.

“It’s unfortunate there are individuals attempting to exploit the community. We encourage everyone to stay vigilant, report any suspicious messages, protect your personal information, and remain informed,” Mr Sheriff added.
